Bob;

Your latest edit has to be the one in Peer Review. That is the only one eligible to be picked. If you want to leave an earlier version on site for comparison that is fine, but your latest revision needs to be here.

Thanks

Gnomon - time to move on

Just checking some of the numbers in this.

Question 1

You say a century, at the time you are describing it, has 80 men.

A cohort consists of 6 centuries, which makes it 480 men.

You say cohort I is bigger, it is 800 to 960 men. Does this mean it has 10 to 12 centuries in it, with 10 to 12 centurions, or were its centuries bigger.

Question 2

A legion consists of Cohort I with 800 to 960 men and nine other cohorts, each with 480 men.

That makes between 5120 and 5280 men.

But elsewhere you say a legion has 6000 men.

So who are the other nearly a thousand men who make up the legion?

Thanks for the comment the answer to Question 2, is relatively simple

A legion consists of Cohort I with 800 to 960 men and nine other cohorts, each with 480 men.

That makes between 5120 and 5280 men.

But elsewhere you say a legion has 6000 men.

So who are the other nearly a thousand men who make up the legion?

The other "missing" are the non combatant portion of a legion, Transport, Medical and Clerks, clearly a clarification is needed here.

I shall sort out question 2 later

The centuries were double size the, only discipline and training of this quality of troops made it possible.

The proportion of unskilled men in the other centuries would have made this impracticable

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
