Tree falling in the forest

Cockroaches
h2g2 the 'roach motel of the internet'
Cockroach church
Couchroach
Coache sized cockroaches

So... Lets get this straight... the cockroachs are knocking down random trees, in the forest? <erm> And they've been sent there, by the British Library? <weird> <erm>

But, fellow Hootians, internet web-site watchers, lurkers and gathered dignitrys and researchers, do we not, at the end of the day, all, ultimately, seek, to find, and to have revealed to us, in whatsoever way it shall be revealed, exactly that; Whether witty or otherwise, in 'finding' ourselves, is not, afterall, ultimately the path apon which all must embark, yet, maybe, a path for which, to most of us, is ultimately without end, or destination? weird
For, although as it appears, as it appears, often that as it appears, is not as it appears, as in that which herein has, indeed, itself, appeared. For though seemingly random, and often aprocrophil, or at least wildly inaccurate or utterly deamed off-topic, it is, ultimately, that which, throughout all its myriad diversions, windings, and seemingly obtuse directions, questioning ourslelves within our own universes and plains of reality? Thursly so it is today, as ever it was. zen
Mind. I'm still not quite convinced by the cockroaches, and the trees are still worrying me, somewhat... erm weird ufo

the cockroaches will survive. The cockroaches don't give a bleep

If you have cockroaches so big you can confuse them with <badgers> they SHOULD be called coachroaches

Thinking about it, I reckon that this conversation thread (and the many like it around here) demonstrates amply why this place works the way it does. Look past the stupidity and the idle whimsy and you'll notice that every remark and ripost is loaded with knowledge, imagination, verbal dexterity and intelligence. This site is the way it is because we don't simply tediously record raw information, we imbue it with our personalities, and treat information, knowledge and intelligence not merely as things to be respected, but to be enjoyed, played with.

(For those who are now curious, the true etymology for the cockroach's name is simply an Anglicization of the Spanish 'cucaracha'. Carry on.)

OK... who's up for writing a million and one 'how the cockroach got its name', storeys... I'm sure the post would like to run a long running 'how the cockroach got its name',

Comment by Gnomon on ' A550955 ' My Vision for H2G2, by Douglas Adams

... , the Edited Guide was the reason that Douglas Adams set up this site. He envisaged a type of encyclopaedia, cheaper than Encyclopaedia Galactica and more friendly.

What he did not foresee is the h2g2 Community, which can spend weeks arguing about any given topic without ever reaching a conclusion and without ever contributing to the Edited Guide. The Community is essential to the operation of h2g2 for three reasons:

- they provide the friendliness which encourages people to come to h2g2 and look around.

- they provide the encouragement which makes writers stay here; without the community, most writers would quickly become bored and leave. Unlike Ford Prefect in the books, we are not paid for our contributions.

- the Community can provide a very quick answer to simple questions on a one-to-one basis, which the Edited Guide can't.
