What none of the commentators seem to have addressed is that just North of the three visible leaves of the original probe there is another white object that, to me, looks like another of the leaves.
The released pictures are based on a composite of the three pictures available of the site, taken with different lighting conditions. One of these original images shows this white object at least as bright as the main part of the Beagle probe.
So is the reason that it didn't report? That it fell apart? Not quite the limited success story that has been doing the rounds I know, but it seems at least possible that the landing system didn't quite work to its full extent.

We could ask the aliens - but they aren't handy at the diagnostics.
