h2g2's Doctor Who articles are a bit of a jumble. We have 3 articles on the missing episodes for a start. As for the Episode Guide, there are 2 series of articles started on this subject. The first series (by Smij - Formerly Jimster, GTBacchus, spook and Paully) has entries on the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and the year 2010 on its own, while another series by summerbayexile only got as far as 3 entries, covering eras rather than decades (Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and the Missing Years between 1989-2004).

This Update is an attempt to update the series as far as the 50th anniversary and rectify the anomaly that is having an entry all about one single year while all other entries in this series cover whole decades.

We've obviously reached the 'Doctor Who' saturation point, where even on h2g2 people are fed up with discussing 'Doctor Who'

The solution? We need more articles about 'Doctor Who'!

No, you did a great job of summarising the other episodes and including fascinating snippets of information

One thing I noticed was when episodes were in two parts, it wasn't always clear when they were - sometimes part 1 was highlighted, and sometimes part 2, but not both...

I'm not clear about what prequels are... they sound funny though!

Thanks for the read through – especially considering this article is a little long (or, as I like to think of it, bigger on the outside...)

I've added a bit more explanation as to when stories are two-parters and have also added a bit more information about the prequels too. Basically they're just very short introductions / teasers.

(In case anyone was wondering, the first series descriptions were written by Smij aka Jimster, so it was downhill all the way when SashaQ read my bit.)

I'm still not entirely clear about the prequels and the difference between them and scenes that appear before the title sequence - when were they broadcast?

The scenes that take place before the titles are pre-title sequences, and part of the episode.

The prequels are stand-alone introductory scenes not broadcast as part of the episode (though relating to it), instead either shown completely separately either online, on the BBC Red Button, during BBC's Children in Need or just included as an extra on the DVD.

I've added words to that effect to the text.

I have waited too long to read and comment here.

I have not have seen more than a half dozen episodes, I am sure a few of them included Daleks. I never understood enough of the back story to become enthused.

In my defence I have watched several seasons of Red Dwarf religiously. Most BBC programs shown here are on PBS and sometimes their schedules are a bit random

When I think about a 'prequels' I think of the second series of 'Star War' films, although the were filmed later, the story takes place a generation before the first three.

Scenes of a film that were shot at the time, and omitted from the final release are 'out-takes', unless they contain funny mistakes, when they become 'bloopers'.

If they were filmed before the full production they are simply 'trailers'

Of course this may be a UK / US thing

Before posting here I did. of course, read the entire Entry and have a couple comments;

This can be read a few ways;

Did she look up as a bird was flying over and 'let go',

Was she giving someone an 'evil look',

Or maybe she was planing an evil act?

A word or two could clarify this.

The proper nautical term is 'splice the main brace', usually the thickest rope used while sailing a square-rigged ship (the anchor cable might be larger, but were not talking about that now). The crew were usually given an extra ration of rum after completing this difficult task. The phrase is commonalty used when offering someone a even today.



What I might really like to read is 'A Dummy's (or maybe better "Beginner's") Guide to Dr. Who.

There are dozens of questions in the mind of a first time viewer, rather than just listing them, I'll wait until you ask.

I watched several episodes of 'Red Dwarf' before they repeated the opening show. Then it all made perfect, if humorous, sense.

I know that anyone who asks for another Entry should be encouraged to write it themselves. I just do not have the knowledge, or interest - except I would to read it.

I did not look to see if there is one on h2g2, but if there is it should be linked in the introduction.

You're right about 'outtakes' 'bloopers' and 'trailers', but Stephen Moffatt and the BBC call them 'prequels' if they are set before an episode and 'minisodes' if they are intended to be independent adventures. As that's what they are officially called, then that is what I am calling them too – but you're right, they are trailers. Oh well, a by any other name and all that...

I've added a bit more about Amy having something nasty in her eye (but as she doesn't learn what it is until Part II, it is in 'Flesh and Stone').

There is a introductory article to Doctor Who at: A215993 – I've linked to it in the first sentence. Like most of h2g2's 'Doctor Who' articles it was written before the series returned so is probably getting a bit out of date now. But feel free to let me know your questions about the series, and we can see how many that article answers.

I just had a look at the other Entries in the series eg 1980s, and agree that you need another paragraph at the start to explain what this Entry is about in relation to the others.

Apart from that, the Episode Guide itself looks ready to me

I'd just tweak it thus:

In 2010 a new production team took over the running of the series, at the same time that a new cast was introduced. Matt Smith played the Eleventh Doctor from 1 January 2010 until 25 December 2013. In this time he appeared in three complete series, four Christmas specials and the show's 50th Anniversary episode, as well as in a two-part story in spin-off show The Sarah-Jane Adventures. Although Doctor Who's showrunner Steven Moffat had planned to cast an older actor as the Doctor, Matt Smith was only 26 when he was offered the role, making him the youngest actor to play the part to date.
