I'm almost in that dangerous situation myself. I downloaded an installation CD from RedHat and ran it. Set up Linux on dual-boot with no problem. Most things installed with remarkably little trouble and I now have a highly functional and addictive system which I can use for all my email and browsing and many other things. It's sooo nice to get away from that other operating system. Total cost so far of operating system and oodles of quality software: 0.00p (Euros 0.00 at current rate of exchange). The only fly in my particular ointment is that I can't get the printer to work (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/F56429?thread=233366). I've spent hours trying to track down the problem. I'll get there one day, and there are plenty of people out there ready to assist, but for now it's a real head-banger and rather undermines the fun. Of course, if I were actually to pay for my Linux distribution I'd get more support, but I was hoping to demonstrate that it worked and was useful before shelling out. ing

Now I'm really in trouble ...
I've solved the printer problem , thanks to patient assistance from someone who knew what they were doing. I seem to have created the problem myself by installing an incompatible version of some of the software .
So now there is seemingly no obstacle to my spending increasing amounts of time with the penguin.
The good news, though, is that the rest of the family are likely to go the same way, so at least we will all be in the same boat.
