Yeah, oddly appropriate. You're right.
Of course, Gore Vidal improved that script...he claims he put in the 'homoerotic subtext', which would probably have given General Wallace a fit.

I never knew that. I might watch the movie again, with that in mind.
Poor old Charlton, getting all insulted and outraged about it so many years after the event. He must have felt like Gore Vidal had robbed him of his masculinity or something. I think if I was in his shoes I would have found it quite amusing when I found out decades later.

I never got the feeling the guy had a sense of humour.
And frankly, my favourite scene with Heston in it involves him in a cage...
