Time Travel Photo Journal #15: Off to the Beach
Philadelphians call it 'the Shore'. Most of them go to 'the Jersey Shore'. That's New Jersey. Me, I always liked 'slower Lower Delaware'. The beach towns in lower Delaware and neighbouring Maryland are quieter. Less excitement. The 'hot spot' of this family-friendly shoreline is Rehoboth Beach.
What's a Rehoboth? Biblical place name. Originally, Rehoboth, Delaware, was a Methodist summer camp. Now, it's got a very tame boardwalk, with arcade games, beach-junk shops, and…salt water taffy.
People like to eat this. Don't ask me why. Bringing some back for the people who feed your cats is considered a tradition.
The ubiquitous Carol M Highsmith photographed the iconic sign for the Library of Congress. This sort of thing is called 'Americana'.
The good part of seeing the sign is knowing that you can now get off Highway 1 and into your bathing suits. Head for that welcoming water. Lie in the sun. Forget traffic.
On a cold November day, it's nice to think of lying on the beach.
Here's a virtual walking tour of the town.
