Nice story, I like to do a bit of research before visiting places if only to enjoy the story telling abilities of the local guides. Some are inspired.
On a medical note I imagine that if the Mayor drank that much wine in one go he would not only have preserved the town but pickled himself at the same time.
Perhaps he should be on display somewhere like Jeremy Bentham.

What a good idea! They'd get a lot of tourists that way. The Jeremy Bentham story always fascinated me.
I'm with you - sorting out the stories is part of the fun. And saving a town by risking alcohol poisoning is just...so Bavarian.
