Back when Hawaii first became a state, muumuus were everywhere...the trauma lingers...

Besides, I thought 2legs needed inspiration for his next sewing project.

Famous people can and do wear Muumuus.
Marlon Brando wore one in 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' (1996). And who can forget Homer Simpson in a Muumuu in that episode of the Simpsons in which he wears a Muumuu?

I used to have a very shapeless dress, it was quite justified and rather ancient. Didn't realise it was a Muumuu, mind .

My sewing skillz are non-existant, I can make shapeless elasticated skirts, but that's about my range.

This is great fun. But definitely needs some pictures.

As for sewing, the variety with yokes might be tricky. And, if there are sleeves, they'd have to be inserted. Not sure if you could give simple instructions

I know I couldn't. The geometry of the sleeve defeats my understanding.

My sewing skills are lurking still at about the level of getting buttons back on shirts in vaguely the right place, or altering the odd hem/cuff that needs adjusting although....

Seeing as muumuus were designed by missionaries as a more modest (and less sexy) alternative to the pareo, it's hardly surprising that they lack allure.

The traditional style ones are quite a lot of work - maybe nor that difficult in terms of fitting, but there's a lot of finicking work compared with a simple sundress made out of a bit of pre-shirred cloth and a couple of straps:
Inseam pockets;
yoked collar;
tucks on the front and back;
a front opening placket with buttons;
deep pleat in the centre back.

That's a lot of technical terminology...placket, inseam, tucks...!

Having a look at the entry, and thinking about it, would some of the parts be betterer were they split, into like lists or soemthing?:

Esp thinking at the beginngin where its talking of the err... reasons for clothes, I think it might not have been... would they look betterer in a list/bulleted? or not... of course...

ahh... NOt many people know anything about eel fishing... including, strangely enough, my Grandmother... She was rather obsessed by eels though... Or at least I think it was eels slithereing about she was talking about...
