Being married to a psychologist and working in the mental health field myself, found this very interesting. It is sadly true that most people learn about mental illness from fiction and common preconceived ideas about sufferers tends to jade any first hand experiences, no matter how unexpectedly pleasant.

Dickens was in a train crash in his fifties and survived the disaster but witnessed numerous deaths, there's a psychology paper on his, and Pepys' post traumatic stress disorder, so it has been around long before our times.

Seriously, there's a lot we can find if we're paying attention - and there's a lot we can do here at h2g2 to change things, if we remember that the readers are out there watching.
