Explanation: I accidentally stumbled upon this Guide Entry from 2000 while messing around for the Post.

The first sentence read, 'The Straight Dope is a question-and-answer column written by a man called Cecil Adams.' I'm a big fan of that site, so I thought there was a bit more to the story than that.

It was either complain to Editorial Feedback, or update the entry. So I've written this.

All the original copy is there, but with additions and links.

I hope Cecil will be pleased with his new h2g2 treatment.

Your link to "the website" does not bring us to a "Straight Dope" website. Instead it takes to someone else's website which speculates on what Cecil Adams looks like.

Interesting. Cecil Adams sounds like a person who ought to be writing for h2g2, or perhaps is.

There doesn't seem to be any evidence that he's a real person. He could be a whole team of busy researchers swotting up the answers to readers' questions. Now that sounds like a good job.

That's my guess, MVP. The reason for the update was my shock at seeing that we were acting as if Cecil's identity wasn't in question.
