A Conversation for Writing Right with Dmitri: Terse or Worse?

The trouble with terse is that it's sometimes difficult to work out what's happening - at least in a short story.
I remember discussions about Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants". Some people were sure the girl was pregnant, and the man wanted her to have an abortion. Others said 'No, she's not pregnant. It's just about their relationship."
Carver's as bad. But what I didn't know until recently was that Carver had a ferocious editor, who cut out big chunks. So the poor old reader has to read and puzzle about the writer's intention.

Oh, dear. I agree - I don't wanna work that hard.
On the other hand, we are all grateful to Thomas Wolfe's editor.
