Laughter does not always equal humour.

Too true. Cruel laughter is one of my most hated things. It isn't funny, and it is such a shame that we use the same sound as we do, say, of delight.
Laughter does not always equal humour.

That's right, Vip. I'm thinking if we reflect on it, maybe we'll encourage the extra effort needed to add to the truly humorous writing.
As so many of our Post contributors do, I might add.
Laughter does not always equal humour.

I'm still searching for where you mentioned 'A princess of Mars' where laughter signifies torture, cruelty and death in one of the tribes.
Anyway, it set me off searching for it (I think I've come across various mentions of the book here on h2g2), and you can bet I found it on Gutenberg. I thought it might be something my son would like to listen to, so I downloaded the recorded version and listened to it. Meanwhile, I'm half way through the sequel 'Gods of Mars'.
As always, it's all yoru fault, Dmitri.
