The tiny child lies in it's midwife's arms, eighth child of an eighth son, handed a staff from a dying wizard.
To the shock of all involved, including the wizard, the child is a girl; an unheard of thing (female magic users always becoming witches). But she's got the staff, and like it or not she is a wizard, and the first ever and currently only female wizard. Granny Weatherwax raises her as a witch - this book is where Granny gets her 'I aintent Dead' card. The child's name is Esk. And when she finds out she's a wizard she decides to goe to the school for wizards; the unseen university, where predictably and to her absolute shock she is not made a wizard; women not being allowed in the university, but her power is out of control and she is seriously in need of training.
