THAMESDEFENDER

Hello to you all out there. I am the Assistant Director of the Thames Defence Heritage we are a group of volunteers who restore, maintain and present to the public historic sites of military interest. Our largest is The New Tavern Fort in Gravesend Kent. The fort was built in 1780 and remained in use as a fort until the end of the first world war, during those years the fort was updated on a number of occasions. in 1866 General Charles Gorden came to Gravesend to modernise New Tavern and other Forts on the river Thames and we are pleased that the magazines that were completed in 1872 are still intact. We have restored half of the magazines to depict the world of the Victorian artillery man and other half has an exhibition called Home Front 1940.
The fort was again bought back into use during W.W.2. we know that it was used by the Royal Navy and was called H.M.S Gordon and we are still researching exactly what went on there? In the grounds of the fort we have the Milton Chantry the oldest building in Gravesend 12th centary which has a fasinating history including being used as a barracks for the troops. the Chantry is also in our care
We are open to the public from April to September fron 12.00 to 17.oo
weekend and bank holidays, Special group visit can be arranged by appointment.
cheers THAMESDEFENDER

Hello and welcome to h2g2, Thamesdefender. smiley - smiley

Aximili, one of our <./>ACES</.>, has left you a welcome message on your personal space, I suggest you go and read it. smiley - ok

What you wrote here sounds quite interesting, but this is not a good place to post it. Why don't you write a guide entzry about the fort? Go and read the <./>writing-guidelines</.> to get an idea how to do it.
If you have a look at thze edited entries here, you'll get an idea what you'll need.

Hiya Thamesdefender:

Yes, as Bel says it would make a really interesting Guide Entry, you could add links to the site etc BUT as it stands, it seems like advertising & the Terms & Conditions of the site don't allow that, so possibly somebody may "yikes" it.

Interesting project, we have some groups here in France who do similar stuff.
