The mark of the Vintners, the two nicks, is the source of a common and somewhat odd pub name. You often see pubs called 'The Swan with Two Necks', often with a pub sign featuring a perfectly normal looking swan, rather than a two-headed one!

The name was originally 'The Swan with Two Nicks', ie, a swan belonging to the Vintners. This has been corrupted over the years into 'necks'

I found references to that when I was reading about it - but I'd never heard of a pub called the Swan with Two Necks so I left it out.

Could add it as a footnote though

There's a couple in Derbyshire- I remember asking my mother about the name when I was a child, and her telling me.

It's a nice little fact I think, and worthy of inclusion.
