I find discarded fence posts quite handy for carving. No need to spend hours hunting round a lumber yard for just the right four-inch square post; there it is.
And why bother with the lumber yard anyway when you could just pick one up at the post office?

small stuff - we don't have much room as it is and it seems a shame to spend all that effort on something just to use it as firewood.
