Yeah, but LA is (nearly) all of that. All the palaver on the way to a closed room, being watched over then ushered out (yes, out of that room) directly back to the departure gate. . Won't be going back there again.
But anyway, nice piece, Dmitri, I know what you mean about deconstruction. Quite often I recognise 'that look' just before I open my mouth.

Aha, another one. I suspected kindred spirits would turn up.
So you've been to LA? I've never been over to that exotic place, but I'll believe anything. It seems like another planet...

Yes, been there twice. First time we took a stopover (and enjoyed it) - the formalities were bad enough.
The second time was our emigration - we went straight through (premium economy as a treat) and to avoid the officialdom (Ha! they tried their very best to spoil our trip.
Do suppressed splutters have meaning to kindred spirits?

Fear of the mods, Willem.
- but I did have a couple of years at (boarding) school near Nairobi, with boys from quite far afield including Tanganyika & southward

Well, Rod, the Afrikaans way to spell it is 'Blerrie'! And it still passes the mods.
Dmitri, she's here now! I hope she notices things are not going OK right now ... I really think South Africa is important in the world context; IF we can make this work ... we will teach everybody a little lesson about how to get along.
