Gnomon - time to move on

A83150471 Overview

You talk about the column commemorating Napoleon 3 without telling us where it is. It almost sounds as if it is somewhere in England.

A83150480 West Wight Fortifications

When you say that the entrance known as "The Bridge" is only 1,500 yards wide, and then in the next paragraph that the entrance near Hurst Spit is only a mile wide, are these two descriptions of the same entrance? If so, can you reword it to avoid repetition.

Shrapnel is also used to describe any fragments of any exploded SHELL capable of causing injury.

Hello – good points made as always, so thanks Gnomon and Florida smiley - dolphin Sailor

Re Gnomon:

smiley - modYou talk about the column commemorating Napoleon 3 without telling us where it is.
smiley - oribThe column is just outside Boulogne, France - not in England.

smiley - modthe entrance known as "The Bridge" is only 1,500 yards wide, and then in the next paragraph that the entrance near Hurst Spit is only a mile wide, are these two descriptions of the same entrance?
smiley - oribThey are both two separate entrances. First to enter the approach the Solent, the gap between the Needles and shingle banks is 'The Bridge'. After sailing through the bridge, passing by Alum and Totland Bays, and to enter the Solent proper, the Solent narrows to the gap between Sconce Point and Hurst Spit.

Re Florida smiley - dolphin Sailor

smiley - mod Shrapnel is also used to describe any fragments of any exploded SHELL capable of causing injury.
smiley - orib Technically you are correct, however I was using the 'also used' bit to mean its use in common parlance. During the war, any small bits of metal flying such as aircraft fragments etc were called shrapnel. This is not technically correct description, but an accepted one. (In fact, 'shrapnel' is also used to describe handfuls of coins, especially coppers; if someone pays for something using only a large number of coins, it's not uncommon to say 'Sorry for the shrapnel').

I'm happy. As I mentioned, I'd like that link and also one to the Lighthouses of the Isle of Wight in the sea forts and Needles sections to be added where appropriate, but otherwise I think it's fine.
