This is my first attempt to write an article for H2G2 so, although I've read the info, I don't really know what I'm doing. I hope you can help.

I think it's about time we had an article on Towel Day and hopefully this will do.

I also agree that the subject is suitable for an Approved Entry. Possibly you may consider writing about examples of things that have happened on previous towel days? For instance I know there is a Facebook page with an 'event' - a lot of h2g2 members have already stated they are 'attending'.


I am sure there would be a few other interesting events that have occurred worldwide.

With a little bit more research to broaden this Entry, then I'm sure you have the makings of a fine first Entry to h2g2.

Welcome to Peer Review, I can't believe that we've not got an entry on Towel Day, we certainly need one!

I don't think it is correct to say it is a "holiday".

Holiday to me means a day off work and that isn't until the Monday after.

I disagree with that definition of Holiday. I have seen plenty of times the mail didn't run, the banks were closed, and yet everyone else had to be at work like usual. Then there are days like St. Patricks day. No banks close, everybody works and they still call it a holiday.

St Patrick's is a bank holiday here

But maybe call it a "memorial day" instead?

Hi Rebecca! This is a good Entry - I think it will probably be picked to be part of the Approved Guide, as we don't have an Entry on Towel Day yet, and this is a good one.

There are a couple of style points which you could tidy up.

Firstly, I find the phrase "all things The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy-related" is clumsy. It's the presence of the word "The" in the middle of it that makes it cumbersome. If it were "all things Hitchhiker's Guide-related", it would be OK, but since this is the firsit time you are mentioning the series, you need to spell it out in full, so I think you should say "all things related to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

Secondly, in the section "Why a Towel?" you have:

"It has many practical uses and is also of great psychological use. For the full list of uses please see H2G2’s page on Towels."

The repetition of the word "use" or "uses" distracts the reader from the meaning of the sentence. It's always a good idea not to repeat words like this, unless you want to do it to achieve a particular effect. You should think of other ways to say it:

"It has many practical uses and is also helpful psychologically. For a full list things you can do with one, see the Entry on Towels."

Ok, that's enough on style.

Other things you can do are to add links to the entry yourself. For example, on the word towel in the second paragraph (carry a towel), you can put towel and this will automatically link to the Towel entry. Don't worry about this if you don't want to, as the sub-editor can do it later.

It looks as if you wrote this in the new 'Barlesque' H2G2. If you are going to make changes to it, you should switch to the old 'Brunel' system, as it is more reliable. There are bugs in the new system at the moment. Just click here:

Rebecca should not link to any of those in her Entry. If this entry is going to be Approved, it can't have links in it to unapproved stuff.

There's nothing to stop her using information from other entries if she rewords it. But many of those entries are not about the International Towel Day, they are about a meeting of Scottish Researchers around the 11th of May each year, which they also call Towel Day. Referring to these might confuse things.

Why is there the difference between the two dates, 11th and 25th?
