Walk on the right instead!

Post 1

Frankie Roberto

It's an established practise to walk on the right, because then you are more likely to see cars coming and not get run over. Admittedly this is more of an issue on late night country lanes, but it applies on city roads too.

Besides, if we have this as a counter-campaign, we can maintain the present status quo chaos system!

The highway code advises walking on the right, and who are we to disagree with their sound judgement, after all, these are the people that tell us to drive on the left.

As for the London Underground, they ask you to stand to the right, so faster walkers can 'overtake' on the left, an action mimicking the behaviour of driving on the right.

In most tunnels connecting platforms on London Underground Stations, signs are posted saying "Keep Left" (see Paddington station's maze of tunnels as an example). People walk on the left on escalators, and stand on the right. This is why I picked the left (and for the other reasons listed in the campaign page). Walking on the right (facing oncomming traffic) is only recomended if there is no pavement so that you can be seen by drivers. Where there is a pavement present, the pedestrian is not forced to walk on the right.

Ah, but on a rainy day it still helps to see cars coming so you can avoid getting splashed.

I've had a think about Pastey's comment that the "highway code advises walking on the right". Yes Indeed...

... if a person walks on the right of the road they can still walk on the left of the footpath on the right hand side of that road. In so doing they are on the side of the footpath closest to the road facing the oncoming traffic, and hence more visisble to drivers than if they were walking on the right hand side of said footpath.

Dis that!

If everybody walks on the left, won't we need roundabouts or traffic lights where footpaths intersect? smiley - devil
