This is my first real Guide entry - I did write something previously (about 'Breaking the Fourth Wall') but that was more of an experiment to see how it came out. This one is written from the heart!

Very Good.
But what happens if someone order a pint of Guinness, is that acceptable? If not, I'm not going there!
One small comment. The Guidlines call for Edited Guide articles to be written in the third person. If you were to re-word the first person elements of this entry to the third person, it will be an excellant candiate for the Edited Guide.

Guinness is okay, though I've never tried ordering it myself (in The Diggers, that is; I drink it on occasion elsewhere).
Thanks for the tip about the third person viewpoint - I'll try to rework the relevant parts.

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Aug 29, 2002
After re-working, this may or may not be suitable as an Edited Entry, but if it does get picked I'm sure that it won't be finding its way into the '5 most neglected' list on the front page There'll be a healthy discussion about exactly where the best pint of beer can be found.
Oh yeah - my best pint is Holt's mild ale at The Claremont Hotel in Moss Side, Manchester... leastways it was 25 years ago

Hi there Bravie, great entry!
As to 'edited guide' considerations... well, i'll leave that up to pr. But I for one loved this entry.
It *is* personal, but i think it serves as a good review of the pub and the 'way things work' there. Surely that's got a place in the guide.
Say Gosho, you were a regular in the Claremont, were you. I used to drink in there (from time to time) a few years back. Small world.
so, all the best with this and future writings, Bravie

Dammit, I've thought about this over and over and I can't see any way to rework the last part of the post into the third person. It's my own personal experience and it just doesn't sound right any other way. If that means it won't be considered for an edited entry, then so be it.

According to the Edited Guidelines, you shouldn't have third person in an entry unless;
1) It's something like 'My experience with cancer'; or
2) It's a blockquote.
Why not put it in a blockquote - say it's a researcher's experience.

I thought that '70'- and '80 shillings' refereed to the tax that the Excise levied on the brew. I may be wrong, of course...

You may be right! Further investigation is called for - the staff at the Diggers are sure to know...

Blockquote added, as well as the tax thingie and a couple of other minor tweaks.
Thanks for the advice, people - if you're ever in Edinburgh, the pints are on me!

'That isn't just my opinion' - make that 'this researcher's opinion'.
'the bartendender had only worked in the pub for five years, so he had to ask another member of staff where the lager tap was'
This is a great piece, Bravie!

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
