Gnomon - time to move on

Entry: Dublin Statue Trail - A807905
Author: Gnomon - U151503

I think this is ready for review now.

Mrs G and her friend H have promised to walk the trail and provide information about coffee shops along the way, but I could be waiting a while for that, so if such information is forthcoming, I'll add it in as an Update later.

I've include links to 21 photos which I've put on Flickr, but I hope that some or all of these could be accepted by the Eds for the Entry itself - they're all formatted to h2g2 standard.

This is a fine entry, Gnomon. You've added just the right amount of history with each statue.

One thing you might consider doing is to beef up the introduction a bit - it seems to launch into the first statue very quickly. Maybe mention here how Dubliners have nicknamed some of the statues? Or maybe some mild/sardonic disclaimer for those of a sensitive nature might stop people yikesing the entry in future smiley - rolleyes

I'd also mention that Oscar Wilde lived much of his life and was imprisoned in England rather than Ireland.

I've been to Dublin a couple of times, but have never had any free time to explore. I'll put that right next time and follow this fascinating trail.

smiley - cheers Icy

Thanks, Icy. I've added a few sentences about Oscar Wilde which I think make it clearer.

I'll think about expanding the intro.

Hi - I'm glad to see that this Entry has traversed the plain of gloom known as being 'hidden'. smiley - biggrin

Just wanted to ask whether you have a rough guideline for the amount of time to set aside for the whole trail? ie, walking time + 5 minutes at each statue? This would help people know whether they have time for the whole trail, or part.

It's also the convention when describing walks to state whether the terrain is hilly ( and I seem to remember Dublin is flattish?) but it would be useful to clarify that most of it is on pavements, for instance.

Maybe these two points will be clarified when the cafe breaks are included.

The centre of Dublin is pretty flat and there's nothing that a walker would find steep in the trail. There are one or two places where there are steps, so it might not be entirely wheelchair-friendly.

I don't know how long it would take, as I haven't walked the whole of it in one go, and some parts of it I cycled along. I'll have to walk it and time it to see how long it takes.

I'll walk this trail myself some weekend. It would be a pleasant way to spend some time in Dublin. And I like spending time in Dublin.

I've nothing useful to add other than to say that as usual, it's a well written piece. I like the links to pictures of each of the statues described, that's a good idea. smiley - ok

Gnomon - time to move on

Two things to report.

Firstly, my new copy of the Statue Trail has been reported to the moderators. This means (according to the BBC programmer I've been dealing with) that it will now be referred to the moderators every time I change it, even if I remove the "suspicious" words from it, because the moderator filter is not intelligent enough to spot the fact that these words are no longer there. The only way to get around it is to copy the content to a new entry, and I'd have to take it out of Peer Review for this. I think I will just leave it, and if you happen to look at the Entry when it is hidden, just be patient.

I've added a section (2nd paragraph) which explains that the nicknames of the statues are offensive, and this is a feature of Dublin humour, showing the locals' affection for the characters portrayed.

Secondly, I'm considering changing the order of some of the statues, which would result in the trail going down one of Dublin's major shopping streets - more interesting than the route it used to go. Hence the comment to self at the start.

I find it very upsetting to have my entry constantly referred, even though I know it is an automatic system doing it.

It must only be happening in PR, because this page is still intact A24336966

What happens is that the page gets referred to the moderators, but remains visible. If you then edited it before the moderators see it, it will be hidden. At least that's what I've been told. I don't fully believe it, because I've made several hundred changes to my Entry and its only now been hidden.

Wasn't it over the weekend that your other copy was first moderated?

I walked the trail yesterday and need to make a few changes as a result. Every time I change it, it is referred to the moderators. So I'm going to withdraw this from Peer Review. I'll make a new copy, remove the offending words (if I've guessed them correctly), make the other changes and re-submit it later.

I had an entry like that. It was about German vocabulary. Even when it was accepted as an EGE entry it kept getting hidden. For containing foreign words!
