Saints (Southampton FC ) have not always played in stripes. The original jersey was white with a red sash. This was refelected in the 'one off' kit in time for their 125th anniversary. Also they played at some time in red and white quarters. This jersey being worn for the last game at The Dell. Where they played Brighton. As Brighton (not the same club though) had been the first game at The Dell.
Also orginally the club was known as Young man's foot ball club (St Mary's) I seem to remember. This club often played on the Common somewhere near the Cowherds pub. Occasionally Saints also played at the 'old' Hamspshire County Cricket ground, and The Antelope ground. Before eventually moving to The Dell. Hope this helps.
By the way I try to keep up to date with my entry on H2G2 see: Southampton Football Club
