I'd been meaning to do an entry on shelter building for a little while. Seeing Sprout's entry on making a snow shelter gave me the push.smiley - smiley

Comments please.

smiley - laugh When are they due?smiley - tongueout

No, this was from a brilliant primitive technologies camp run by Trackways that I've been on (I'm going back again this year) - I can't link to it as the link appears to be broken. I'd been meaning to do one for ages, then Sprout's entry reminded me.smiley - bigeyes

Well, asteroid oblivion or not, it's an excellent entry smiley - ok

Would it also be worth mentioning that the doorway/opening should be facing in the opposite direction from where the prevailing wind is blowing?

sprout

Good stuff

I've used one of these occasionally.

The point about the insects is a good one, but almost inevitably various creepy crawlies will drop off the debris on to you in the night...

Moral of the story - don't sleep with your mouth open in a debris shelter!

Sprout

I saw a really interesting programme on 'top tips for campers' once, where one of the tips was to wear a stocking over your head, kept away from your face by the peak of a cap. You can drink tea through it as well.

I have to say that I've neither done it, nor seen anyone else do it.

Something else you can do to keep warm is to stuff your clothes with the debris. Not very smiley - cool, and you look a bit like a scarecrow, but it does work. Tramps use newspaper!
