A Conversation for Talking Point: Predictions for the Future
Books, the paper kind.

People often ask me (because I work in a progressive public library, with lots of new fangled technology*) whether I think there will be paper books in the future.
I tell them I think it will be a long time before books disappear. At least I hope so. We have to have some way of preserving information. Have you ever tried to open a file you wrote on Works in Windows 3.1 in Word 2000, for instance. The older a file gets, the harder it usually is to read on updated software. Not to mention the fact, that the software often fails! (I mean it's wonderful when it works, but. . .)
I love books, and hope they will survive.
*ie. online databases, Internet access, CD ROMs, e-books, etc.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
