H2G2 London summer meet - 14th May 2011
Created | Updated May 13, 2011
The London meets are always a good way to catch up with old friends, as well as meeting new researchers and forging new friendships, so both new meet atendees,
and those who have atended every meet over the last decade always enjoy the experience.
Unfortunately we were not organised enough to get a Autumn meet together, so we propose to have a meet early summer 2011, voting for the date has now closed, and the date chosen by the community it:
Saturday 14th May 2011
So Who's going?
Its always nice to know in advance just who is likely to be atending, so it'd be great if you are planning on atending if you could let us know in the Sign me up to the Saturday 14th May 2011 H2G2 summer London meet
sign up thread below.
Of course, your more than welcome to just
turn up on the day- the more the merrier!
Where
As tradition dictates, and due to transport issues, the main evening meet event will take place in a pub in Central London:
As for the past few meets, we will again be attending the:
Shakespeare's Head
Africa House,
64-68 Kingsway,
Holborn,
London,
WC2B 6BG.
The nearest tube is Holborn. This pub is literally just over the road from the tube station, and serves food all day, unfortunately the pub does not allow
dogs except for guide/assistance dogs.
It is planned that some researchers will be in the pub from about 2 or 3 PM, with the others who take part in the main afternoon event arriving once
they are done: About 5 ore 6 PM we think. Information on the afternoon events to follow.
Afternoon Event
Although some prefer to just turn up to the pub planned for the evening event, as soon as it opens (you know who you are), there is also traditionally an afternoon event which older and younger researchers can attend alike.
The Afternoon event is again being organised by our resident researcher with inside knowledge of the capital- U236774
The afternoon event is scheduled to start at 2 PM on Saturday the 14th; people should aim to meet up in Trafalgar Square at 2 PM- The meeting point is the Olympic countdown clock in Trafalgar Square which is adjacent to the fourth plinth (with the ship in the bottle sculpture).
The afternoon event will consist of a leisurely stroll up The Strand and Fleet Street, which will take in some of the following;
- Trafalgar Square (obviously)
National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery (if wet)
St.Martin's in the field church (believe there is brass rubbing there)
Admiralty Arch and St. James' Park (picnic or chat around lake?)
The Queen's Chapel of Savoy (a Royal peculiar and the first church to have electricity. Once part of a hospital for the homeless, during Henry VII's reign)
Royal Courts of Justice.
St. Clement Dane's (or the R.A.F.) church.
St. Mary-le-Strand (or W.R.N.S.) church
King's College, London.
Somerset House for the free Ai Weiwei - Circle of 12 bronze Animal / Zodiac Heads exhibition and
Courtauld's Institute (£7)
St. Dunstan's in the West.
Aldwych tube station (disused)
assorted architecture, statuary and memorials, plus old pubs and old newspaper buildings.
St. Paul's.
The walk ends very close to the Kingsway and the Shakespeare's head (handy for the evenign event then!). It is expected to alter the exact schedule of what is done during the walk bvased on peoples prefernces on the day, the weather, and how much time is spent chatting and popping into pubs or cafe's for refreshments en-route...
The Friday Frindge
The Friday Fringe gathering, a traditional pre-meet get together for those who arrive into London the day before and find themselves at a loose end in the evening, will as it traditionally is, be at the George Inn, Southwark (near London Bridge station) - no food so come well fed. This will take place at approximately 6:30 - 7:00 PM.
Who is going?
nighthoover of course.
