A nice place for a quiet holiday.

You're making me homesick !
Nice entry about a beautiful place.
Would it be worth mentioning that Iona's the last resting place of John Smith, the best Prime-minister we never had?

I've never heard of John Smith. But then, I'm Irish and I'm not interested in politics. I'll leave it to others to decide is he worth a mention.

John Smith (or his grave, anyway) is definitely worth mentioning. When he died, Keir Hardie's Labour Party died as well

Did you hear the story about why St Columba settled on Iona rather than Islay? You can see Ireland from Islay on a fine day and he felt he had to punish himself even further by not even being able to see his homeland.

I got the impression that Colm Cille went to Scotland not so much to punish himself as because he was wanted by the authorities in Ireland.

I've added John Smith.

I'm only going on what Nigel Tranter wrote, which may well be somewhat romanticised.
It's years since I read the book 'Columba' but a quick look at the cover says:
"Unwitting cause of civil war, the deaths of 3,000 on his conscience, his missionary penance was to fight a blood-soaked, human-sacrifying heathenism and bring Christianity and peace to the Picts and Scots."
Looks like his mission worked then!
