Affirmative Action

It might be worth updating some of this entry on the University of Michigan since the affirmative action controversy is on the verge of hitting the Supreme Court, and even our fearless leader Dubya felt the need to chime in on the subject.
Did the U of M ever have racial quotas? Their admissions system favors some minorities, but they claim not to have a quota right now. It's designed to bring about a percentage of each race in the school that reflects the average population, but technically they would deny that it's a quota system. And it would be interesting to note if they had specific quotas in the past but stopped at some point, although I don't know if they ever had quotas.
