Blaster Bates

Post 1

Captain Cash

I discovered Blaster Bates over 30 years ago and can never hear him too many times. Every time is a rib tickler. Having just listened to Rory Bremner,on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, saying that one of his would be the BBC Radio cricket commentry of Brian Johnston in uncontrolable laughter, Blaster Bates would be one of mine.
I'm in the Army and was posted to Chester in 1984 but never got to see him when he was on stage in the January of 1986 because I was posted again a week before his appearance. To the uninitiated, the audio versions need to be listened to a few times before you get the grasp of what he's demonstrating with when relating his experiences to his audience. However, I bought a comic video once, I think it was Chubby Brown, and on the inside cover, it listed other comic videos you could buy, one of which was old Blaster. I didn't take the offer up and totally regret it now as my efforts to buy it now have been fruitless. Having the visual will definiteley double the enjoyment and the understanding. If anyone can help, my E Mail is [email protected]

I had no idea that a video was ever made but have just purchased all 6 LP's of his thanks to e-bay!
If anybody reading this has never heard him then give yourself a treat. After a few listenings you will begin to appreciate his natural delivary.
Recently heard Jasper Carrot mention Blaster in a radio show. Perhaps recognition is finally coming. I was lucky eneough to see him live on his final talk tour at a small theatre in Margate. Much older than his pictures on the LP's! However the sharp wit was still there.
The BBC must have video footage of him somwhere as he mentions doing "a bit of telly".
