Who give's a cr*p about what celebrities are doing?

Is it possible to differentiate, in this day and age, between those who become famous simply because they court publicity, and those who are famous such as, say, Bob Geldof because they have done something remarkable? Would the latter have been less likely to inaugurate Live Aid had his star not been on the wane?
I suppose what it all boils down to is the end to which publicity is put. Sir Bob ultimately intended to right a grievous wrong, and went some way to achieving this through shrewd use of publicity. Those who are transparently self-serving (such as Anthea Turner and her chocolate sponsored wedding) get everything they deserve, IMHO.
