Yes, I agree. The whole piece is gut wrenching to anyone with an ounce of spiritual appreciation in them.
I watched the film in a theatre in London when it first came out. It was remarkable that at the end of the film the enitre audience remained seated throughout the credits until the screen went blank - nobody moved, everybody was transfixed. Then they all had to stand up while they played the National Anthem. Never seen a film have that effect on an audience before.
They still played the National Antherm at the end of films performancres in them days.
