One can also reckon him the very soul of 'soul'.

One could make a case the rock and roll tradition began with Leadbelly.
There probably isn't a major performer of the latter twentieth century in folk, blues, country or rock and roll who wouldn't acknowledge a debt.

Leadbelly was awesome; 'Take this Hammer' was another major work.
But I'm not sure they were 'his' songs; he was more a 'walking jukebox' with a huge array of blues & folk numbers in his head...
