Great article! I love reading about social history like this. I'll have a look and see if I can find a British equivalent.

I'll also try and guess some of those answers (although my knowledge of 19th Century German celebs isn't too good). Bismarck must be in there somewhere...

I'm guessing Beethoven and Goethe, but I'm wondering what they thought were the most important events.

Would they still see Waterloo as the most significant battle of the 19th Century? Would they they call the 19th Century the century of progress?

We would think the telephone was an important invention. But would they have seen it that way?
