stiff upper lip? I haven't come across any of this on h2g2.
Have a look at the journals, and you'll see what I mean.
Now I don't qualify to answer your questions, not being English, but I'll tell you anyway.
Sometimes, it helps me to talk about things that annoy me. Once I've written them down I feel better already. I'm never sad if those journals go quiet soon, as my only aim in those cases is to get it off my chest.
However, there are things I would not share with anybody, not even with my sister. (We have a very good relationship, my sister and I). I think some things should remain private. They are between me and the one I love, not between me and anybody else. I'm constantly amazed at the details some (English) friends share on the web for all the world to see.
I think the English reserve is a myth nowadays.

Thanks for that Bel. Some great points there. Yes, we're constantly amazed at the generosity and support shown by the community to posters who need a bit of support and a virtual hug, and just how candid some people can be. But then this site is all about talking and sharing, and that's what makes it so special.

I think that English reserve is varied acording to each individual. As an Englishwoman I choose who I tell things to. I am happy to discuss goings on in my life but when something big/bad/insert word here, happens then I choose who I talk to. There are support groups for certain things, there are close friends and family for other things and there is Facebook for everything else.
I think that English reserve is changing due to the internet and how easy it is to just 'say' anything you want to anyone who cares to listen.
