if 2 times 3 equals six: 1, 2 (2)+ 3, 4 (2)+ 5, 6 (2) that's (2) three times and 2 x 3 = 6 as you can see indicated by the last digit
Therefor: in base 13,
1,2,3,4,5,6 + 7,8,9,10,a,b + c,11,12,13,14,15 + 16,17,18,19,20,a + b,c,21,22,23,24 + 25,26,27,28,29,30 + a,b,c,31,32,33 + 34,35,36,37,38,39 + 40,a,b,c,41,42
How many chunck of numbers is that? NINE. How many numbers in each chunck? SIX. What's the last number? 42. Therefor 6 x 9 = 42

Well since we only HAVE 10 digits in our system (base 10) we can't very well make up NEW numbers. Well I suppose you COULD, but I used letters instead.

Except in your above posting, you have the sequence 9, 10, a, b, c. Two things wrong with this - the 10 shouldn't be there (not in that position, anyway) since it means '1*(13^1) + 0*(13^0)' (= 13 in decimal). Also, you use the letter a, b, c just as numbers - there are digits, not just numbers!
So your sum should be:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 +
7, 8, 9, a, b, c +
10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 +
16, 17, 18, 19, 1a, 1b +
1c, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 +
25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 2a +
2b, 2c, 30, 31, 32, 33 +
34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 +
3a, 3b, 3c, 40, 41, 42.
