elected President of the Soviet Congress.
Born in Privolnoie near Stavropol,
becoming an agro-economist.
Elected to the Supreme Soviet and within a year
entering the Communist Party Central Committee.
General Secretary then President who introduced
Perestroika and the principle of Glasnost.
Survived a coup but soon after saw Soviet Union
split.
