The title "The salmon of doubt" seems to be an allusion to the salmon of knowledge, legendary beast that was caught by Finn Macuil in The Tain (Irish mythology)?
The half a cat is probably related to Schroedinger's cat - the thought experiment where a cat is trapped in a box containing a poison whose release is triggered by an atomic decay. Since, without opening the box, we cannot know if the cat is dead or alive because we can't be sure if the decay occured or not and therefore say that it is neither dead nor alive but in an uncertain state?
