Talking Point: A Science Renaissance?
Created | Updated Jun 25, 2010
Here at h2g2 Towers we've totally enjoyed watching the brilliant Professor Brian Cox OBE share his Wonder of the Solar System with us. His passion for his subject is infectious and it's made us feel excited about solar neutrinos, Hadron Colliders and a whole bunch of other wonderful stuff that tantalises yet sometimes still falls outside the boundary of our understanding. However, fear not: we may be a couple of electrons short of an atom but we are enthused and we definitely want to learn more. Science is popular again. Are we experiencing a renaissance in the field of science?
Have you enjoyed watching Brian Cox on television lately?
Do you think science is having a bit of a renaissance?
Has science suffered because it's perceived as being 'difficult' and we're a culture that no longer does 'difficult'?
OK, big challenge: Can any of you possibly explain to us in simple language what the following terms mean:
- Dark matter
- String theory
- Quantum mechanics
- The God particle
What kind of scientific breakthroughs do you think we might be on the verge of?
What relevance does science have in our lives? Shouldn't we be celebrating science more?
