It took a lot of scrubing though. Nice artical spike. 
you didn't mention the number of emotional and relationship problems people had. It got absolutely ridicules by the week before performances.

I find the best thing to use is blood packets.. little cellophane (?) envelopes about two inches wide/tall, and up to an inch thick (although they often don't go off properly. This is a problem).
Not only do they wash off more easily, but they smell like strawberry.

This blood was basically corn syrup and dye. Makes it easy to clean off backstage aside from getting everywhere first and *really* grossing people out 
. Of course, the mouth blood capsules (which we didn't use in the end) reportedly tasted horrible. Ah, the irony.
