I didn't understand it when I read it back then, and I still don't get it, but that's as much to do with the fact that I never read Finnigan's Wake and haven't a clue what it is about as with the funny language you use.

If you think of it as being an extreme example of what we call in the US 'talking double-Dutch', you might get some of the fun of it.

The first one was very funny, but the second one was hard to understand. So maybe knowing what it is all about makes the difference.

Professor Irwin Corey has been doing that for years, Bel. It's a real example of double-talk. You're not supposed to be able to follow it. A bit like Loriot, I think.

muffled, slurry - probably more slurry than muffled.

I love the idea of having a word that can mean both "muffled" and "slurry".

It conjures up images of farmers acting highly eccentrically.

Oh wait, it's "slurry" as in "slurred". That's a bit disappointing.

I was too lazy to look it up - it never pays to be lazy.

Sounds like a word for Humpty Dumpty.
