A Conversation for Talking Point: The Euro

My thoughts on this

Mister Matty

I'm currently against joining the Euro. It's not because I love the "historic" pound (I'm Scottish, so it always feels more like English currency smiley - winkeye and, anyway, the current Decimal pound is only 31 years old) and it's not because I'm xenophobic or small-minded or anti-progressive or any of the other things you get called by dim-witted liberals unless you're slavishly pro-euro.

The thing is, I can't see how the Euro, something we are currently spending millions of pounds "preparing" to enter (despite the majority of the UK population being against it), can possibly make our lives any better. We're already part of the EU, so much of the border-beaureacracy involved in moving goods, capital and people has been removed within the EU. Are these large British companies like BA so pampered that it's too much hassel to do one little currency change to move stuff onto the continent?

In the UK, the Euro debate has been reduced (by the Media) to a straight conservative-liberal issue. It is nothing of the sort, many left-wingers (including your's truly smiley - smiley ) are opposed to the Euro and many right-wingers are in favour. The media does not give these people a voice (when did you last see Tony Benn on television attacking the Euro? Thought not.), instead preferring to feed us the image of the grumpy old Tory who hates the Euro because he hates foreigners and the smiling clean Blairite who thinks it is Good for Britain. This is a travesty of the debate, perpetuated by both right-wing and left-wing sources. When the referrendum comes, it is up to people in our dirty old media who care about the truth to sweep all this rubbish aside, I wish them well.
