The Moderately Strange Cornice Started conversation Mar 7, 2002
I don't know enough about the economics of the situation to make an informed judgement about whether the UK should sign up, but have heard of some problems with coin design from some cousins over in the Irish Republic.
Their main concern is that there is no longer a heptagonal 50p. They are concerned that blind people may find this difficult. From a British point of view, I can say the same thing about the 20p pieces. How does someone with impaired vision (for whatever reason) distinguish between different coins?
Another concern was the similarity of the E1 and E2 pieces. They have difficulty in distinguishing between the two.
My view: if we must join (and we will eventually), then at least change the design of the coins. We had different shaped coins for a reason.
