WEEK NINE: NATIONWIDE LEAGUE PROMOTION CHASES
egon Started conversation Apr 15, 2002
Last week it was suggested by ormondroyd that Brentford v reading should be included, as it is a virtual promotion play-off, with the winers being promoted. This seemed a damn good idea to me, and I poerused the fixture lists and league tables in the Daily Mail to come up with some vital promotion clashes in the other divisions. There are six fixtures this week, and there will only be four on FA cup final weekend to even the total up.
Some background:
DIVISION ONE:
Man city are champions. 2nd placed West Brom have 86 points, 3rd placed Wolves have 85 points. Wolves are away to Sheff Wed, West Brom home to Crystal Palace
DIVISION TWO:
Brighton are champions. 2nd placed Reading have 83 points, 3rd placed Brentford have 82 pointS. Reading are way to brentford
DIVISION THREE (3 automatic promotion places):
Plymouth and luton are promoted. Cheltenham are 3rd with 77 points, and have two games left. Mansield (4th) have 76 and Rochdale (5th) 75, both with one game left.
Cheltenham are away to Carlisle on tuesday (victory means promotion), and then away to plymouth on Saturday, when Mansfield are home to carlisle (who could play a big part in the promotion chase, despite being 17th), and Rochdale home to Bristol Rovers.
SO, THE ACTUAL FIXTURES ARE:
SATURDAY:
Div 2:
Brentford v reading
Div 3:
Mansfield v Carlisle
Plymouth v Cheltenham
Rochdale v Bristol R
SUNDAY:
Div 1:
Sheff Wed v Wolves
West Brom v Crystal Palace
BONUS POINTS:
Also say who you think will be promoted out of:
1a) West Brom
1b) Wolves
Out of:
2a) Brentford
2b) Reading
And out of:
3a) Cheltenham
3b) Mansfield
3c) Rochdale
DIVISION THREE VOTES VOID IF CHELTENHAM WIN ON TUESDAY
3 BONUS POINTS FOR EVERY PROMOTED TEAM CORRECTLY GUESSED
POLICY STATEMENT
egon Posted Apr 15, 2002
re: GreyDesk's five 0-0s last week. This kind of prediction IS legitimate, if rather silly.
re: Gianluca Festa's own goal. If an own goal is the first goal (ie festa in the Boro-Arsenal game) then points for goalscorer WILL be given to any player who guesses the player who scored the own goal (in this case Festa) or to anyone who correctly guesses that the first goal will be an own goal, as long as they state which team the goal will count for (i.e. Own Goal (arsenal) in Festa's case)
DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
WEEK NINE
egon Posted Apr 15, 2002
Please post your predictions under this heading, and any questions regarding the rules I set out in the last two posts under "policy statement". This just makes it easier for me to decide what to ignore.
The fixtures, for those of you who couldn't work it out from the sprawling first post are
Brentford v Reading
Mansfield v carlisle
Plymouth v Cheltenham
Rochdale v bristol Rovers
Sheff Wed v Wolves
West Brom v Crystal Palace
and who will get the last automatic promotion spot in each division (DIV 3 will become void if cheltenham win tomorrow)

Nice ideas, Egon!
Cheltenham have drawn 0-0 tonight, so they still need to get a result at Plymouth on Saturday, and predictions as to who goes up from Division Three are still needed. A draw at Plymouth will be enough for Cheltenham to be promoted - unless Mansfield win by nine or more goals! But if Plymouth beat Cheltenham then either Mansfield or Rochdale could nip in and grab the last promotion place.

Brentford 2-1 Reading (Burgess)
Brentford to go up

Plymouth 1-1 Cheltenham (Friio)
Rochdale 1-0 Bristol R (McCourt)
Cheltenham to go up
Piggies 0-4 Wolves (Rae)

I also think Crewe are going to play a blinder against Rotherham today, and there is a good chance that Wednesday will go down despite the current 9 goal difference.

GreyDesk Posted Apr 20, 2002
Oh, and I don't really want Wednesday to go down as this would mean we don't have the big pay day derbies next season

The Premier League.
C'mon, you must remember it. Remember when Sheffield United were good? Come on, rack your brain. Remember it? brian Deane and Vinny jones?
Oh, sorry, I suppose no-one can be expected to remember that far back

GreyDesk Posted Apr 23, 2002
Oh yes the Premier League. Thats the one where Manchester United isn't doing quite as well as expected isn't it?
There must be such wails of disappointment and the gnashing of teeth amongst the 10 year olds of Basingstoke and the Home Counties
