I came to this page to find the date of the Challenger explosion and did not find it so here it is: Wednesday, January 28, 1986.
I lived in Japan at the time and was teaching English conversation classes. I had a mid-level class of Japanese housewives on Wednesday mornings and one of the women was the first to break the news to me.
The space shuttle Columbia exploded on Saturday, February 1, 2003.
