A very good entry. I'd never heard the origins of the steth before.. I did some work as an emergency medic for my college, and often had a hard time hearing the pulse when reading the patient's blood pressure. However, this was often at a party with loud music blaring in the background...
Don't forget the importance of warming up the steth before placing it on the patient!

There are few more frightening things than a cold stethoscope. I've always wondered if doctors keep them in the freezer just for amusement.
