Clyde Built... a term known throughout the World to guarantee that a ship was well constructed, sturdy and reliable! A term that is still used today to talk about the ships built Oan ra Clyde1

The Early Years


The story of shipbuilding on The Clyde goes back to the earliest darkest days of history! When Mr. Ug first thought of sailing ships then was born the Clyde Shipbuilding Industery.

The Golden Age


The Golden Age of Clyde Shipbuilding came about because of three (almost) simultaneous breakthroughs.

  • Dredging of The Clyde
  • Steampower
  • Iron Ships


Whilst The (Lower) Clyde had a vigorous, and profitable, industry building wooden ships, these factors opened The (Upper) Clyde to The Empire; and so heralded The Golden Age of Clyde Built. Who can not name at least three famous Ships built on The Clyde (The Queens)2,
