Entry: Dartmoor, Devon UK - A674011
Author: Sue - probably lurking while I'm supposed to be studying - U148484
It's taken a while to get this one together, to be honest it could waffle into pages worth but I think all the salient point have been covered. If there's anything else that you think ought to go in, please say.
It's been co-written by C Hawke U91473(a local) and myself (Essex girl hooked on Dartmoor walking)
As always, feedback and constructive critisim welcomed.

Dartmoor is the place in the UK I miss the most(Having expatriated myself to Brussels)
I used to love walking on the North Moor in the mist - no paths, no crowds, just the sound of the mudlarks and your steps squishing on the grass or bog.
Your description of the last type of bog brought back a lot of memories - sometimes you can gently bounce on this type of bog which is good fun until you go through the surface...
Dartmoor is a very good place to develop the navigational skills that serve one well in the high mountains - a good challenge is to to go out when visibility is poor and try and find something like Brown's House (marked on the 1:25,000) or Kitty Tor. Obviously your caveat about knowing how to use a map and compass applies in spades to the above comment...
You can rock climb on the moor as well (Hay Tor in particular) but the granite is very abrasive and very rounded so I'm not sure I could recommend it.
None of this is really structured comments that add to your very complete entry, but hey, I thought I would share a few memories.
You might want to mention some of the following, but not essential:
Dartmoor Ponies - Satan's own breed! Red eyes, a temper and a kick like Bruce Lee...
When you mention the clearing of the forest, you could also mention Wistman's wood, one of the few remmnants of original forest I believe.
Ten Tors - every year thousands of kids get an introduction to walking, and crucially the chance to take responsibility for themselves without an adult watching their every move, as they walk 35,45 or 55 miles on the moor in teams of 6 over a June weekend. I remember it fondly!
Cheers

That Darmoor place sure does get to you doesn't it
You're quite right about Wistmans being ancient woodland, there are 3 I believe, Wistmans, Black-a-Tor copse and I think the other is Yarner? Could be wrong there, I'll check.
Should have mentioned the 10 tors and the ponies. I was on the moor on 10 tors weekend this year, poor kids, absolutely sodden on the Saturday and sunburnt on the Sunday - good job I mentioned the weather!
...sometimes you can gently bounce on this type of bog which is good fun until you go through the surface... and then no amount of flashy goretex kit will help!
Thanks for the feedback, I'll try to work in the extras you mentioned.

There are two or three typos left, but I'm sorry I have better things to do than pointing them out. -
