Haven't finished reading this article yet, Pastey, but just had to ask: have you ever tried Kern Knotts Kracking Stout from the Hesket Newmarket brewery in the Lake District? I live for the day when I might sample it again - I can't describe it without sounding like Meg Ryan in *that* scene (only, convincing) and it turned me off Guinness completely (I knew Guinness was dead and pasteurised before but it had always gone down favourably: no longer).
If you haven't tasted it, try to forget I mentioned it and pity one who can't forget a lost love...

I've tried several of the Hesket Newmarket brews, but I don't think I've tried that stout, not yet at any rate.
