the official representation of this CA is M:23/3 The meaning is thus:
M: A Moore neighbourhood, i.e. the surrounding 8 cells
23 A live cell will survive on 2 or 3 live neighbours
/3 A dead cell will live if it has 3 live neighbours.
The method to remembering the second half is
S - survive
O - oblisk i.e. the / symbol
B - born i.e. come alive
Interpret the acronym (sob) thus formed as you will.
M: can be replaced by N: for a Von Newman (4-cell) neighbourhood, or H: for a neighbourhood like this:
OOX
OXO
XOO
where only the O positions are counted.
the number after the slash cannot be a 0. (otherwise cells in the middle of nowhere would come alive.
see my personal area for a link to a cool Life simulator. (wait a couple of days please)
